FiCEP Recertification Requirements & Guidelines

The Certified Credit Union Financial Counselor (CCUFC) designation requires recertification every three years to ensure that your financial counseling knowledge is current.

Summary of Recertification Process

Thirty (30) credits of financial counseling continuing education are required for recertification. Click here to see a listing of applicable continuing education activities. All credits must be earned within the three-year recertification period. 
There are three methods for recertification:

  1. Attend the CUNA Certified Financial Counselor School: Update and successfully pass the recertification exam. This method fulfills the 30 credits of continuing education credits.
  2. Use the self-study method and successfully pass the recertification exam. The FiCEP Recertification module (Learn more about how to obtain this module below) and passing the exam earns 20 credits of financial counseling continuing education. You must earn an additional 10 credits of continuing education credits.

Steps to Recertification

  1. You will receive notification via e-mail prior to when your recertification is due to expire.
  2. Complete 30 credits of continuing education credits for financial counseling during your three-year certification period.
  3. Choose your method of recertification.

    1. Recertify by attending the CUNA Certified Financial Counselor School: Update and successfully passing the recertification exam.

      1. This method fulfills the 30 credits of continuing education credits needed. The price of testing is included in the program tuition. You do not need to complete the recertification application with this method.

    2. Recertify by using the self-study method.

      1. You must complete the Recertification Application and then you will receive the FiCEP Recertification module.

        1. You must document 10 credits of financial counseling continuing education earned during the last three years. Please note: Your application will not be accepted without the 10 credits of financial counseling continuing education.

        2. Upon receipt of your application, CUNA will process your application and send you the FiCEP Recertification module and bill your credit union the recertification application fee of $215.

        3. You will receive a complimentary test code with your module.

      2. The self-study of the FiCEP Recertification module and passing the exam earns 20 credits of financial counseling continuing education.

Testing Information

If you are recertifying by attending the CUNA Certified Financial Counselor School: Update, you will test on-site and the cost of testing will be included in your program tuition. You will receive your grade on-site after the testing period concludes.

For self-study only: Use the FiCEP Recertification module to study and review. To request your recertification exam, please complete the Proctored Exam Request Form. You must schedule an exam date with your proctor prior to sending this form to CUNA. Upon receipt of this form, CUNA will validate the information and the exam materials will be sent to your proctor. Take your recertification exam. Results for self-study students are mailed 4 weeks after your proctor mails your exam to the National Processing Center.

Your Recertification Certificate will be mailed to you 6–8 weeks after processing the exam.

Instructor/speaker at programs sponsored by organizations listed above or as a speaker on credit union financial counseling issues. Credits recognized are for hours teaching or speaking, not for preparation time. 2 credits per hour of instruction
