Board Member's Biography

Teresa Freeborn


As President and Chief Executive of Xceed Financial Credit Union since 2006, Teresa Freeborn oversees all aspects of the Credit Union's strategies and operations. With nearly $1 billion in assets and 70,000 members nationwide, Xceed operates Financial Centers and sales offices in five states. 

During her tenure with Xceed, Freeborn has demonstrated visionary, creative decision-making and has developed a reputation for pragmatic, strategic thinking and an eye to the future in a highly competitive industry. An energetic and persuasive leader, she elicits dedication, commitment and extraordinary productivity from management and frontline staff and works effectively with Board members, executives, and staff to create and build positive business relationships.

Among her proudest accomplishments are her success in championing a progressive new culture, identity and brand for Xceed that led to the best loan, deposit and member growth ever for the Credit Union, while introducing various programs and initiatives that improved both member and associate satisfaction.

Always forward-thinking, she has orchestrated strategic mergers with five credit unions, growing membership and expanding Xceed's footprint in key markets.

Freeborn is an active advocate in the credit union movement, and has been a driving force behind a number of industry-wide initiatives to increase awareness and strengthen credit union branding, boost professional management, pioneer financial services technology, mobilize the industry on Capitol Hill, and further the advancement of women in leadership.

She is also well-versed in Board governance, having served as a director and officer for numerous professional and philanthropic Boards of Directors. A past chair and current board member of the California/Nevada Credit Union League's Board of Directors, which honored her with both its Distinguished Service Award and its Lifetime Achievement Award, Freeborn is also past chair of the Credit Union Executives Society, which inducted her into its Hall of Fame for her extensive contributions to the credit union industry. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and a member of the Board of Directors of the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation - whose primary purpose is to further financial literacy among consumers. She is the chair of CUNA's Credit Union Awareness Initiative and is charged with developing a long-term program to improve the awareness of the credit union category across the nation. She has also championed “Credit Union for Kids” and has helped to raise millions of dollars for children in need.

A champion for the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU), she was an inaugural member in WOCCU's Global Women's Leadership Network and is a member of WOCCU's World Leadership Development Committee. She was named one of the industry's 'women to watch' by Credit Union Times in 2012, and has also been honored for her contributions to the success of other women with three separate Stevie® Awards for Women in Business.

Known for her warmth, humor, and outspoken style, Freeborn is a sought-after speaker and a source for news media on topics relating to credit unions, finance, and women in leadership.

A native of Vancouver British Columbia, Freeborn holds an MBA from Simon Fraser University and resides in Hermosa Beach, California.

Before joining Xceed Financial, Freeborn was a key executive of Kinecta Federal Credit Union, serving as Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications, as well as President of Kinecta Financial and Insurance Services, a for-profit subsidiary of Kinecta. Prior to moving to the United States from Canada, she was an executive with Central One Credit Union in Vancouver, British Columbia.
