Iowa Credit Union League, CUNA participate in CSG Midwestern legislative conference
Posted July 10, 2017 by CUNA Advocacy

The summer conference frenzy kicks off with the Iowa Credit Union League serving as a sponsor of the 2017 Midwestern Legislative Conference Annual Meeting, held this week in Des Moines.

The event is organized by the Council of State Governments (CSG), a nonpartisan association of state officials serving all three branches of government in all 50 states and the U.S. territories.

The conference is a great opportunity to meet with state policymakers and discuss critical state issues such as economic development and taxation. In recent years, Iowa bankers have attacked the credit union tax exemption with misleading ads and discredited studies. The League and CUNA will utilize the occasion to provide information to legislators about how credit unions help drive economic development, and how the credit union tax difference benefits Iowans and all Americans.

Over 300 legislators are expected at CSG’s Midwestern Conference. In addition to sharing credit union information at legislative networking opportunities during the conference, advocates will attend conference break outs related to financial services.

In the coming weeks, CUNA and the leagues will actively engage lawmakers at state conferences. Next, CUNA will participate in the American Legislative Exchange Council’s Annual Meeting in Denver July 19 – 21, then we will join the Cooperative Credit Union Association, the American Association of Credit Union Leagues and CUNA Mutual in a credit union awareness campaign at the National Conference of State Legislator’s Legislative Summit in Boston in August 6 – 9. The Northwest Credit Union Association is leading the charge at CSG’s Western Legislative Conference in Tacoma August 15 – 19.
