Preparations Underway for Summer Meetings of State Lawmakers
Posted July 13, 2016 by CUNA Advocacy

In a few weeks, CUNA staff will travel to the Midwest to engage with thousands of state legislators at both the American Legislative Exchange Council’s (ALEC) Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, and the National Conference of State Legislatures’ (NCSL) Legislative Summit in Chicago.

At the ALEC Annual meeting, we will serve as members of the Commerce Insurance and Economic Development Task Force (CIED) and the Tax and Fiscal Policy Task Force.  As private sector chair of CIED’s Financial Services Subcommittee, CUNA’s Director of Advocacy, Shelton Roulhac, will make a presentation outlining CUNA’s position on payments including data security and chip-and-PIN.  Staff from Georgia Credit Unions and Affiliates are also expected to attend the conference. The 2016 Annual Meeting will be held July 27 – 29 and over a 1000 attendees are expected.

At this year’s NCSL Legislative Summit, the Illinois Credit Union League will join CUNA, the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL), CUNA Mutual Group, Illinois state credit unions and other leagues to raise the awareness of credit unions through marketing and local media outreach. Legislators and staff from across the country participate in NCSL’s eight standing committees and they adopt policies under its rules of procedure for consideration at the annual business meeting held during the Legislative Summit.

CUNA and league staff will host Summit attendees at the America’s Credit Unions’ exhibit booth and distribute high tech giveaways with the America’s Credit Unions logo. Representatives from the following leagues are expected at the conference:  Northwest Credit Union Association, Georgia Credit Unions and Affiliates, Illinois Credit Union League, Tennessee Credit Union League, Cornerstone Credit Union League, Kentucky Credit Union League, Minnesota Credit Union Network and the Credit Union Association of New Mexico. The Summit will be held August 8-11.
