Posted February 27, 2019 by CUNA Advocacy

On Wednesday, February 27th, the Senate Commerce Committee held a hearing entitled “Policy Principles for a Federal Data Privacy Framework in the United States.” The hearing looked at what Congress should do to address the risks to consumers posed by unsecured data and how to implement data privacy protections for all Americans. Chairman Wicker (R-MS) and Ranking Member Cantwell (D-WA) both stressed the need for comprehensive federal privacy legislation. Senators Rosen (D-NV) and Baldwin (D-WI) expressed the need to include data security measures in any privacy legislation produced by Congress; a principle CUNA has consistently advocated for.

CUNA wrote to Chairman Wicker and Ranking Member Cantwell prior to the hearing asking the Committee to address consumer data privacy in a meaningful way.
