The Week Ahead in Washington - May 22, 2017

The House and Senate are in session this week.  When they complete their business for the week, both chambers will be in recess until June 5th.  

ON THE FLOOR

The House of Representatives is scheduled to consider H.R. 1761, the Protecting Against Child Exploitation Act of 2017; H.R. 1461, the VET Protection Act of 2017; H.R. 953, the Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act; and H.R. 1973, the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse Act of 2017.

The Senate will resume consideration of Iowa Governor Terry Branstad of Iowa to be Ambassador to China and John Sullivan to be Deputy Secretary of State.

IN COMMITTEE

As usual, we are engaged in several committee meetings on both sides of the Capitol including the following:

TUESDAY

  • The House Committee on Ways and Means will hold the second in its series of hearings on comprehensive tax reform: “Increasing U.S Competitiveness and Preventing American Jobs from Moving Overseas.”  Click here to see CUNA CEO Jim Nussle’s letter to the Committee at last week’s tax reform hearing.
  • The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee will consider the following nominations: Ms. Sigal Mandelker, of New York, to be Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Crimes, U.S. Department of the Treasury; Ms. Mira Radielovic Ricardel, of California, to be Under Secretary for Export Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce; Mr. Marshall Billingslea, of Virginia, to be Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing, U.S. Department of the Treasury; and Mr. Heath P. Tarbert of Maryland, to be Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of the Treasury

WEDNESDAY

  • The House Committee on the Budget will hold a hearing: “The President's Fiscal Year 2018 Budget.”      
  • The House Committee on Ways and Means will hold a hearing: “The President's Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Proposals with U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin”

THURSDAY

  • The Senate Budget Committee will hold a full committee hearing: "Hearing on President's FY 18 Budget with OMB Director."
  • The Senate Finance Committee will hold a full committee hearing: "Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Proposals for the Department of Treasury and Tax Reform."
