The Week Ahead in Washington - September 24, 2018

ON THE FLOOR 

On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee will continue its high-profile confirmation hearing of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to be an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. 

On the floor, the Senate will consider the nominations of Jackie Wolcott to be U.S. Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency AND Wolcott’s nomination to be U.S. Representative to the Vienna Office of the United Nations.  The nomination of Peter A. Feldman to be a Commissioner of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) will also be considered. 

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on three bills collectively known as “Tax Reform 2.0.”  The three bills are: 

  • H.R. 6756, American Innovation Act of 2018 
  • H.R. 6757, Family Savings Act of 2018 
  • H.R. 6760, Protecting Family and Small Business Tax Cuts Act of 2018 

The House will also vote on the Conference Report to accompany H.R. 6157, Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2019 [Department of Defense and Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Act, 2019 and Continuing Appropriations Act, 2019].  This legislation includes a continuing resolution to ensure level funding for all government functions through December 7, 2018.  This legislation has already passed the Senate. 

The House will also vote on H.R. 302, a bill reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for five years.  This bill also includes supplemental appropriations for disaster relief. 


IN COMMITTEE 

Tuesday 

  • The House Financial Services Committee Housing and Insurance Subcommittee will hold a hearing entitled, “HUD Office of Inspector General Report: HUD’s Oversight of the Alexander County (IL) Housing Authority.” 

Wednesday 

  • The House Financial Services Committee Capital Markets, Securities, and Investment Subcommittee will hold a hearing entitled, “Oversight of the SEC’s Division of Investment Management.” 
  • The House Financial Services Committee Monetary Policy and Trade Subcommittee will hold a hearing entitled, “Administration Goals for Major Sanctions Programs.” 
  • The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation will convene a hearing titled “Examining Safeguards for Consumer Data Privacy.” 
  • The House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial and Antitrust Law will hold a hearing on the Bankruptcy Administration Improvement Act of 2017. 

Thursday 

  • The House Financial Services Committee will hold a full committee hearing entitled, “Oversight of the Federal Housing Finance Agency’s role as conservator and regulator of the Government Sponsored Enterprises.” 
  • The House Committee on the Judiciary will hold a hearing on H.R. 3945, the "Copyright Alternative in Small-Claims Enforcement Act of 2017." 

Friday 

  • The House Financial Services Committee Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee will hold a hearing entitled, "Examining Opportunities for Financial Markets in the Digital Era."
