Roundtable on debt collection and the Latino community

The Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will co-host a roundtable meeting to examine how debt collection issues affect Latino consumers, particularly those who have limited English proficiency. The event, “Debt Collection & the Latino Community,” in Long Beach, California on October 23, 2014, will bring together consumer advocates, industry representatives, state and federal regulators, and academics to discuss the issues.  The roundtable is free and open to the public.

Georgia check casher penalized for repeated BSA violations

FinCEN has announced the assessment of a civil money penalty against Mian, Inc., doing business as Tower Package Store, a money services business (MSB).   Mian committed numerous violations after being put on notice by their examiner, Internal Revenue Service’s Small Business/Self-Employed (IRS SB/SE) Division, of deficiencies in meeting its reporting obligations. Mian has further failed to meet its deadlines to renew its registration as an MSB.  Mian has admitted that it violated the BSA’s program, reporting and registration requirements, and has consented to FinCEN’s assessment of a civil money penalty of $45,000.
