Speaker: Jordan van Rijn
Entrepreneurs are an exciting population and hold great potential for credit union growth. But they require a different approach to lending and underwriting. Jordan van Rijn is Senior Economist at CUNA and was previously Senior Loan Officer at ACCION New Mexico-a non-profit small-business lender-where he spent four years dedicated to supporting small-businesses; based on this experience he will share tips for successful small-business lending, including how to evaluate, underwrite and support start-up, immigrant-owned and micro businesses. This will include a review of important community partners and financial products. Jordan will also share a brief update on the current state of the economy and an outlook for credit union business lending.
It truly is a new world of business and commercial lending opportunities for credit unions with last year's January 1, 2017 implementation date of NCUA's Final Business Lending Rules. One year in, how is your credit union doing? Significant opportunities exist allowing credit unions making business loans greater flexibility and more autonomy, shifting the rule's focus from the past prescriptive approach to a more principles-based methodology. Along with new opportunities, come more questions and even a few challenges for credit unions to consider. Come prepared to discuss the new possibilities your credit union is exploring; share what new programs you have implemented; and ask questions from your peers to learn more about how they are shaping their business and commercial lending programs to embrace these new opportunities and challenges.
