Consumer borrowing is an important economy-wide topic because it reflects overall spending and serves as an important measure of both consumer confidence and financial health. Knowing how consumers truly feel about borrowing in today's economy is instrumental for developing strategies to support them as they decide how and when to borrow. Particularly in the digital lending space, opportunities abound for credit unions to carve out a unique presence and maximize on indicators from members and consumers.

Speaker: Frank Drake
Our speaker, attorney Frank Drake, has recently seen a pattern of disastrous losses suffered by well-meaning credit unions made victim of their own eagerness to serve exploitative borrowers. Too often a credit union is made a “patsy” by a fraudulent borrower offering a phantom security interest in a non-existent, exotic car in exchange for a high-dollar loan. Yes, a dressed-out diesel dually pickup truck can cost like an S-Class Mercedes. Still, the fraud who wants your money seems attracted to flashy European styling, not to domestic mud-flaps. The credit union is attracted to what looks like a well-secured, high-dollar loan. A defrauded credit union's misery is dreadful to behold. This engaging general session first aims to describe the source of the problem and the methods commonly employed to defraud credit unions. Then it suggests some common-sense measures to minimize the risk. Prevention is cheaper than misery and far less painful.
