Learn More about Member Benefits
COO, Heritage Credit Union
“I enrolled in CUNA Management School because I saw it as the next step in my professional development. I knew that the Certified Credit Union Executive (CCUE) designation carried a lot of weight and that people came away from the program as more knowledgeable and confident leaders.
The curriculum strikes a balance between instilling knowledge and developing skills. I particularly appreciated the crisis management courses which teach you how to interact with the press and protect your institution. The presentation skills course also come in handy for when I speak before my credit union's board and leadership team.
While the program was well tailored to the specific needs of credit union leadership, some of the most important lessons we learned in CMS were about leadership in general. We learned about strength management, the concept that you optimize your team by configuring it to utilize its members' individual strengths. From a teamwork perspective, that exercise showed me the importance of asking for help when you need it, of locating areas of strength and weakness, and of delegating responsibilities appropriately.
I would say the single most important experience at CUNA Management School was the Stanford Banking Simulation from my first year in the program. The simulation places credit union professionals in sophisticated financial scenarios, giving them an opportunity to test their decision-making process and observe the consequences of those decisions. For an aspiring executive, being able to test your choices in a controlled environment is extremely valuable because it takes pressure off and allows you to experiment. The exercise helps you discover the many factors to consider when making a decision that will affect your credit union's future.
The school aligned me with a group of tremendously kind and thoughtful people who, like me, are working to establish themselves as credit union leaders. These are more than just friendships; these are professionally fruitful relationships that I believe will continue to pay dividends for years to come.
Attending CUNA Management School enhanced my career. Plain and simple.”
