"During a one-on-one meeting my CEO, (when I was loan officer for Keystone United Methodist FCU) I was asked where I saw myself in five years. I said I wasn't sure, but I wanted to make a difference, wherever I could. In 2013, I decided to start with going to CMS.
It was crazy but the personal growth, compassion and relationships I gained made it more than worth it. During my first year, the inaugural project tested my ability to know my credit union. It challenged me to learn about Keystone from the ground up-not just our financial data, but also our strengths, weaknesses, core values and history.
The sessions at CMS are rigorous, but they helped me understand the significance of each aspect of the project while I researched. Year after year, I felt a progression within myself as my knowledge of credit union operations grew. As you learn about the different roles at a credit union and the responsibilities they entail, you gain not only an understanding but also an appreciation for what your co-workers do. The knowledge I gained has helped me empathize more with my team.
CMS opened my eyes to three main things. First, that I knew more about credit unions than I thought I did; second, that it's OK not to know everything (and more important to surround yourself with people who know the things you don't); and third, that asking for help doesn't mean you're dumb-it means you're smart enough to ask!
The activities at CMS taught me to reflect on myself, how I interact with people, and how I can make a difference for others.
Over the three years I spent at CMS, my relationships with classmates became closer and stronger. When you laugh, cry and get stressed out with someone, you form a special bond with them, and each of my classmates will forever hold a special place in my heart. I have stayed in contact with my classmates, not only to catch up on our personal lives, but also for occasional professional advice.
I learned that there is more to management than just being a good employee; you have to know how your decisions affect everyone, from the backend to the members, and CUNA Management School teaches you just that."
