Cybersafety for the BSA Officer
Length: 60 minutes
Speaker: Nicola Foggie

Cybercrimes are at an all-time high, with millions of Americans affected by data breaches, “phishing” attacks through emails, viruses, malware, identity theft, etc. The number of attacks, foreign and domestic, are growing each day. It’s no wonder that cybersecurity for financial institutions, including credit unions, is top of mind. Recently, there was a nationwide effort by email “phishers” who targeted BSA Officers of credit unions, and other financial institutions. The cybercriminals were attempting to lure BSA officers into giving them network access using a classic contaminated email attachment scheme. Cybercriminals know that BSA Officers are the guardians to the gateway of safety and soundness for their credit unions. So, if your credit union is not keeping up with best practices for cybersafety, it will be vulnerable to an attack. This interactive session will examine the components of the nation-wide “phishing” attack on BSA Officers as well as other types of cybercrimes to bring awareness of how to protect yourself, your credit union, and its members, while sharing with you steps to reduce the risk of becoming a victim to these types of schemes.

This session will cover:

  • What happened in this precisely targeted malware campaign against BSA Officers
  • Learn the different “ishing” scams and other types of Cybercrimes
  • How to avoid getting caught in a “phishing” attack
  • When to recognize that social media is NOT your friend
  • Walkaway with a 10 Step Cybersafety Plan for your credit union

Let’s talk about trends in the marketplace, and key indicators we should be looking for to ensure our credit unions are not being used for money laundering practices. Don’t be the next financial institution named for deficiencies... sometimes being in the spotlight isn’t where you want your credit union to be.

  • Learn where can you find the current trends and how to keep up to date

Data Integrity: Why Do We Need to Care?
Length: 60 minutes
Speaker: Ryan Canin

Data integrity affects the whole Credit Union: Data and its quality is not only a pivotal part of BSA and day to day operations but affects everything from loan quality to collections effectiveness. Since these areas often rely on the same data, its quality is crucial to a Credit Union's Health. The BSA department plays an important role in the validation & collection of data when it enters a Credit Union and throughout its lifecycle. This session will examine how data becomes compromised and how we can prevent this through appropriate controls in the lifecycle of data management.

Enhanced Due Diligence - When to Escalate, When to De-escalate
Length: 60 minutes
Speaker: Ashley Cole

BSA is one of those evergreen and ever-evolving areas of compliance, and due diligence is a cornerstone of any BSA/AML program. We’ll look at the requirements regarding risk-based customer due diligence and discuss how your processes are escalated when high-risk members require enhanced due diligence. Assessing the expected activity of members, particularly those presenting higher risk, is fundamental for compliance and critical in helping protect your credit union.

 Learning objectives:

  • Learn about the newest trends in money laundering, including hidden trends
  • List the key indicators important in identifying these new trends
  • Learn where can you find the current trends and how to keep up to date

What's Hot with Payments and BSA/AML
Length: 60 minutes
Speaker: Rayleen Pirnie

This session explores the sometimes seedy side of payments, and their intersection with BSA/AML. You’re not alone if you’re concerned about recent pushes for “faster payments” and how that translates into your CU’s ability to monitor and stop prohibited transactions. If you think money laundering is only found in the illegal narcotics world, think again. There’s a whole different environment of payment rules, regulations and guidance that place responsibility on the CU to monitor payments. Do you know why?

This session will examine:

  • The potential disastrous impact of faster payments on BSA/AML if your CU is not prepared
  • What (and why) NACHA has recently required on TPSs and TPSPs
  • CIP challenges in an online world
  • The challenges of FinTEch
  • Cyber and BSA/AML
  • How Kansas City CU’s helped combat (and ultimately bring down) a forced sexual exploitation ring
  • What the recent flurry of BSA/AML findings have looked like and what to watch out for
  • What “actual knowledge” really means and how your CU can be involved
  • The future of BSA/AML

We’re going to hit a jackpot of various cases where payments and AML have recently collided (sometimes smoothly, sometimes not) and examine lessons learned to arm you with more information, particularly on what “not to do.”
