America's Credit Unions Well Represented at 2018 NCSL
Posted August 06, 2018 by CUNA Advocacy

Last week, CUNA and credit union league staff joined more than 5,000 attendees in Los Angeles at the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Legislative Summit.

Engagement at the NCSL Legislative Summit is particularly important because legislators adopt policies in NCSL’s eight standing committees.  The adopted policies become the backbone of NCSL’s efforts to fight unwarranted federal preemption of state laws, unfunded mandates, and federal legislation that threatens state authority and autonomy.  Of note, the NCSL passed a directive calling on Congress to amend the Controlled Substances Act to remove cannabis from scheduling, thus enabling financial institutions the ability to provide banking services to cannabis related businesses.  The directive passed without dissent.

Credit unions were well-represented at the Legislative Summit.  As in past years, CUNA and league staff greeted lawmakers from nearly every state at the America’s Credit Unions’ booth in the exhibit hall.  Leagues at the event included the California and Nevada Credit Union League, the Georgia Credit Union Affiliates, the Illinois Credit Union League, the Ohio Credit Union League, the Minnesota Credit Union Network, the Montana Credit Union Network, the Cornerstone Credit Union League, the Northwest Credit Union Association and the Wisconsin Credit Union League.

Next year the Legislative Summit will be held in Nashville, Tennessee, August 5 – 8.
