CUNA and the Leagues Advocate for Credit Unions at NCSL
Posted August 08, 2016 by CUNA Advocacy

Today through Thursday, CUNA and League staffers will join more than 5,000 attendees at the Legislative Summit of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) in Chicago. At the Summit, we are advocating with state lawmakers on behalf of credit unions and their members on an array of topics, including the dual chartering policy, taxation and data security.

Engagement at the NCSL Legislative Summit is especially important because legislators and staff adopt policies in NCSL’s eight standing committees. If two-thirds of the states in attendance approve, the policies become the backbone of NCSL’s efforts to fight unwarranted federal preemption of state laws, unfunded mandates, and federal legislation that threatens state authority and autonomy. To ensure that none of these policies harm credit unions, we will be participating in several meetings and sessions of the Communications, Financial Services and Interstate Commerce Committee, as well as the Task Force on State and Local Taxation.

As in past years CUNA and staff from several leagues will greet lawmakers at the America’s Credit Unions’ booth in the exhibit hall. Leagues represented at the booth include the Illinois Credit Union League, the Ohio Credit Union League, the Kentucky Credit Union League, the Minnesota Credit Union Network, the Georgia Credit Union Affiliates, the Cornerstone Credit Union League, the Tennessee Credit Union League and the Credit Union Association of New Mexico. Credit union fact sheets and high tech giveaways will be distributed to booth visitors.

As a part of an awareness campaign launched by CUNA, the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL), Illinois credit unions and CUNA Mutual Group, state lawmakers will see the America’s Credit Unions logo emblazoned on the shirts of conference volunteers and the conference registration bags.
