Credit Unions Represented at this Year's ALEC Conference
Posted August 13, 2018 by CUNA Advocacy

Last week, CUNA and credit union league staff attended the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) in New Orleans. ALEC is America’s largest nonpartisan voluntary membership organization of state legislators dedicated to the principles of limited government, free markets, and federalism. Comprised of nearly one-quarter of the country’s state legislators and stakeholders from across the policy spectrum, ALEC members represent more than 60 million Americans across the country.

CUNA participates in two of ALEC’s task forces: Tax and Economic Policy and Commerce, Insurance and Economic Development (CEID) Task Force.   One of the bigger discussions that came out of NCSL and ALEC is the Wayfair decision.  Various interpretations of the recent Wayfair decision from the U.S. Supreme Court has led to confusion about its impact for online sellers and consumers.  The Tax and Economic Policy task force discussed efforts to have some clarity on the decision and its impact on different states.   Another issue that seems to be a priority to states and legislators is Cannabis Banking and financial intuitions being stuck in the middle.   CEID members addressed the conflict of laws when states authorize medical or recreational of cannabis products, and the federal law still prohibits use.

Next year, ALEC will be held in Austin, Texas, August 8 – 12.
